Assistive Technology for Physical Therapists in Early Intervention & Pre-school
Course Objectives, Outcomes & Course Agenda

The value of assistive technology (AT) to children, particularly those with challenges and limitations secondary to disabilities, is multifaceted, impacting their quality of life, independence, and opportunities for development. AT can significantly improve functional abilities, enabling children to participate in daily activities and reducing dependence on caregivers. This independence boosts self-esteem and mental health, critical for child development. Benefits of AT included mobility, literacy, feeding, education, sensory support, as well as social and emotional benefits imperative to living a full and healthy life that is more productive and economically viable as the child grows and matures. The value of assistive technology to children lies in its transformative ability to enhance independence, education, social inclusion, long-term economic prospects, and health.

The focus of this course is assessment and choice of ATD’s for horizontal developmental positions - supine, sidelying, prone, quadruped and the vertical developmental positions of both sitting as well as standing. An in-depth discussion on the normal development in these positions will ensue, as well as the challenges, therapeutic strategies and how ATD’s are assessed for and chosen for the child. With respect to wheelchair sitting, all the major joints and limbs are considered.

Learn about what is assistive technology – why it is important, how we define it, and how children have a right to it as embodied in the ‘inclusion’ defined by Federal IDEA, part C. Learn what is NOT assistive technology and what cost will be covered or not covered by the early intervention program. Learn about the 5 developmental domains in early intervention – with a focus on the gross motor domain, as well as measuring for wheelchairs, including case examples of children who would benefit from assistive technology.

This primer is a MUST READ for all early intervention and pre-school physical therapist’s & PTA's who service the professional needs of the  infant, toddler, and child with needs for assistive technology.
