Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, (Bayley-III)
Course Objectives, Outcomes & Course Agenda

The Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition (Bayley-III) is a standard series of measurements used primarily to assess the motor (fine and gross), language (receptive and expressive), and cognitive development of infants and toddlers, ages 0-3. This measure consists of a series of developmental play tasks and takes between 45 - 60 minutes to administer. Raw scores of successfully completed items are converted to scale scores and to composite scores. These scores are used to determine the child's performance compared with norms taken from typically developing children of their age (in months). The assessment is often used in conjunction with the Social-Emotional Adaptive Behavior Questionnaire.

A comprehensive developmental assessment instrument, the Bayley III examines those facets of a young child’s development corresponding to the five developmental domains of early intervention and pre-school. The test request 30-90 minutes to complete (depending upon child age), and scoring yields scaled, growth & composite scores, percentile rankings, confidence scores and age equivalents.

The Bayley II can be used for the following purposes:

  • Screening infants and toddlers for emergent language-learning problems
  • Screening older preschoolers in whom delays are expected
  • Obtaining a description of a child's present language environment
  • Aiding clinical diagnosis
  • Setting intervention goals

Designed to identify young children with developmental delay and to provide information for intervention planning in the cognitive, language, motor, social-emotional, and adaptive development of children between the ages of 1 month and 42 months, and provides developmental risk indicators that may detect atypical behaviors, which warrant further evaluation. This evaluation instrument is very important to the repertoire of tools used by speech-language pathologists, occupational and physical therapists, as well as other early childhood specialists identify infants and toddlers.
